Your website copy tells people what you do.
We’re not big on statistics here. We’re words people. But we’re fairly sure that if you do a quick Google search you’ll find some statistics about how long people stay on a website if they don’t think it can help them.
It’s not long.
There’s a great quote about there being “lies, damn lies and statistics” but this particular statistic rings true, because people are impatient. They want to know if you can help them or not.
And if you don’t tell them straight away, they’ll bob off somewhere else, never to return. And you’ll never know because they’ll never message you to say “I visited your site but your copy was awful so I didn’t bother to stay.”
When was the last time you wrote a message like that? Never, that’s when.
The fact is, whether you’re an accountant, a VA, a coach, a tutor or an artist, people are searching for what you do. They want your help and they’re prepared to pay for it.
But if you don’t tell them that you can help them then they’ll find someone else who does.
And pay them instead.
Your website copy can actually help people find you.
Have you heard of SEO? Don’t worry if you haven’t. We can’t stand jargon here. If we have to use it, we explain it first.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It basically means doing things to persuade Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo! to put your website as high up the list of results when people type in what they’re looking for.
Sometimes, people who specialise in SEO call themselves SEOs, which can be confusing. We think they mean Search Engine Optimisers, but who knows.
Examples are good so here’s one.
If you’re a gardener in London, and, when people type in “gardeners in London”, your website comes up at the top of the first page of Google (or whatever), then your SEO is top notch.
If it comes up on the 25th page, it’s not so good.
There are many ways to improve your SEO. One is known as “on-page SEO”. It basically covers everything on your website pages – including the words.
By finding the right “keywords” – the phrases which people type into search engines to look for your service – and ensuring those keywords are on your pages, you give yourself a much better chance of being found.
What you don’t want to do, however, is write them over and over and over again. Google, especially, does not like that. It’s known as “keyword stuffing”.
The art (and it is an art) is to sprinkle those phrases throughout your site, often enough to tell search engines that that’s what you do, but not so often that it sticks out like a sore thumb.
I can do that for you. (Not write it so it sticks out like a sore thumb, obviously).
I can write SEO-friendly copy that isn’t just sprinkled with keywords, but explains what you do and reads really well. People will actually tell you how easy to understand and follow your website is.
Your website copy will save you time and earn you money.
This might sound hard to believe, but if you get your website content right, you will not only save time but make more money while you are doing it.
If people visit your site and know straight away that you can help them, then they won’t have to take up half an hour of your time asking you if you can help them.
They’ll know already from your site – and if it’s what they want then they are well on the way to becoming new customers.
Good website content = time saved.
New customers = money earned.
